What about the generals-the chess fans, when the great Deschapelles was a General.
Victor Zheljandinov childhood name was on a middle name – Savelyevich. He was born in Lyubertsy near Moscow, his father (who had a reservation, as the plant Manager, then to the mentality that sought in the meat grinder of war) went to the front and died in 1942. During the war, Victor was evacuated in elnia. The mother managed to pull of Savelyevich sister (younger brother died). Victor began to play chess, she graduated College and went into the Army – was in Western Group of Forces. Married the lady from Lviv and in 1974 came to Lviv, where he became an important figure in chess life of the city and country. Long been the grandfather, then the grandfather, with all the free time grandchildren.
A great achievement of Savelyevich was the winning of the Championship of Friendly Armies ahead of Geller and Hort in 1965. Then in 1967 in the USSR championship in Kharkiv he played brilliantly, and if not for a missed wins in games against Polugaevsky and tal, then he cannot be a medalist.
And yet the highest achievements of Savelyevich were coaching, he coached Marta Litinskaya, Josip Dorfman and me at the USSR Championships, the national team of Ukraine, national team of Yemen at the Olympics in Dubai, then “Polish” the education of the champion of Europe among juniors up to 18 years old Mateusz Bartel. Was second in Karpov’s second match against Kasparov. To me he was very helpful in overcoming the crisis, helped to play a more active – in his own style. He received the title of Honored coach of Ukraine.
The Savelyevich – an avid fisherman – during one of the charges against Karpov in Pļaviņas we picked strawberries and came across a small lake. The Savelyevich said, “But there must be a carp, tomorrow morning will check!” The next morning we had Breakfast, had lunch, and the Savelyevich – no. At five he appeared bent with two buckets full of carp. Said that I could not stop until caught! (as it seemed). In Germany the service was quick, and the Savelyevich filled the boredom of fishing, catching mostly blackheads and regaled smoked pratini all friends.
Marta Litinskaya it was during the period of training with him has made the greatest progress – reached the final match of the candidates, where they were unlucky in the match against Nana Alexandria (lost completely won the match). The biggest project of Savelyevich as a senior coach of the Carpathian military district, became the education of Vassily Ivanchuk. He lived in the small town of Berezhany in 80 km from the city, and twice a month “SKA” was sent to him to practice coach-master. Perfectly played tennis when he was 50, yet successfully fought with young – me and Romanishin. By the way, the Savelyevich, take my “rent” Romanishin in 1985 at the interzonal in Mexico city.
The patron Saint of chess in The Carpathian Military District at the time was Colonel-General Nikolai Abashin, first Deputy commander. Strong, first, before the war he studied with masters Goldberg. Chess loved to memory loss and time. Often in front of one of the grandmasters stopped the car, and General fun through the window screaming “chess ” brig”, and had to go to the headquarters, where General closed the curtains, causing the waitress with a full range of drinks and food, and the night blitz-marathon began. But first, each of us saying, – Nikolay Borisovich, tell your wife about the arrest! The man was wonderful, after retirement he worked at the state sports Committee head of all constructions of the country. This was a good joke – before the match Kasparov-Belyavsky in 1983 he came to the chess club, where Sasha was engaged to coach – ensign Michael Podgaets. Abashin, of course, could not refrain from the game, come on, he says, will verify coach blitz. Podgaets won under zero, “Okay,” says the General, ” your turn now, Sasha!” Belyavsky jokingly played so that brought all parties with a General draw. Here the General and said, realizing the draw: “Yes, Sasha, for a match you’re not ready, but the ensign can replace you!”
The General held in the County a great team – headed Belyavsky, Dorfman, Litinskaya, having won the championship of the USSR. The Soviet Army actually loved the chess – Karpov himself was considered a military chess. Ballim lover of chess was Marshal Rodion Malinovsky, Minister of defense attended every championship VS chess personally and setting up their individual prizes.
Victor Zheljandinov has three pairs nominal hours with a signature from the Minister Malinovsky. Among military enthusiasts can be called the Colonel of the air force master Oleg Stetsko and Colonel of the medical service Mykola Golovko. He was the General-in-chief of the military sanatorium in Archangel, where she lived our group on the second match against Kasparov. General missile troops Evgeny Lipovetsky was head of the Department of chess, General Oleg Chebotarev wrote an interesting book on strategy, and General Vinogradov was President of the Soviet chess Federation in the 50-ies. When I coached the national team of Syria in 1979, its President was Colonel Monaim, and I still have great memories of him.
… The Savelyevich many brilliant victories. The next batch with one of the best chess players of the USSR Lev Aronin. He is 10 years playing in the finals of the Championships of the USSR and only because of a serious illness did not become a grandmaster.
